Vanilla is a flavour derived from orchids of the plant Vanilla, primarily cultivated in Mexico, Madagascar and many other African and South East Asia countries. The word vanilla, derived from the diminutive of the Spanish word vaina (vaina itself meaning sheath or pod), simply translates as little pod. Vanilla flavour is primarily used in ice cream but has become a standard cake ingredient.
